Convertisseur chinois ↔ zhuyin

How the annotation is laid out

Zhuyin is printed in a narrow column running down the right-hand side of each character, which is why it fits so neatly beside vertical text. On the web it is set above the character instead, using ruby annotation — the same mechanism Japanese uses for furigana. Tone marks stay attached to the end of the syllable rather than sitting on a vowel, so the symbols underneath never change shape.

Characters with more than one reading

Some characters are pronounced differently depending on the word they appear in. 行 is xíng in 銀行 but háng in 行為; 了 is le as a particle and liǎo when it means to finish. The converter reads the whole sentence rather than each character in isolation, so it usually picks correctly — but personal names and rare classical usages are worth checking by hand.

Traditional and Simplified

Both work. Zhuyin is used with Traditional characters in Taiwan, but the readings are the same either way, so pasting Simplified text gives you the same zhuyin you would get from its Traditional equivalent.
